shuttleworth, library
The Shuttleworth Site is Bedford College’s agricultural campus and in 2012 mk40 architects were appointed to convert two of the existing college buildings into new classrooms, a library and a SEN department. The existing buildings were stripped right back to their primary structure allowing the internal layout to be specifically designed for the different uses.
A series of classrooms and IT rooms were designed into one of the buildings, with the emphasis always on a variety of sized spaces which could be used for different types and sizes of lessons.
This building was then linked through with the neighbouring one where a new library and the SEN department were relocated. The library was designed with a series of different types of spaces; quiet area, group work, IT work and open reference area.
