community building, cyprus

This new build visitors’ centre is located in a small village in the southern area of Cyprus. It will function as a tourist centre for the area, plus provide the village with a beneficial community centre.

The design of the building is influenced by its relationship with the church on the hilltop and the centre of the village; hence its splayed form. It is also designed to minimise solar gain during the hot summer months.

The building is raised up to create an open plaza and courtyard which picks up the prevailing wind and provides a great external space. The main section inside the building is a large community hall, with the adjacent rooms providing a doctor’s surgery, office areas and tourist reception.
