CBC engineering building
central bedfordshire college
The project is a 1600 sqm new build engineering centre for Central Bedfordshire College. It is located to the south of Leighton Buzzard on the outskirts of an industrial estate. It provides specialist vocational education for the College in a stand-alone facility detached from the main campus in Dunstable.
The building was designed on a tight budget. The rectangular plan form, efficient space planning and simple architectural idea created a building that fulfilled the brief, has architectural interest and was on budget.
The large double heighted entrance area leads into the main entrance, student café and Learning Resource Centre. The ground floor then has a series of workshops orientated around a double heighted display and assembly area at the rear. On the first floor, classrooms occupy the perimeter of the building centred around an informal student breakout area.
