brookes, bedford college

This 4 storey Victorian building, on Bedford’s high street, has been converted to provide the College with a commercial hair and beauty salon on the ground floor, with teaching and administration rooms on the upper floors.

The complete strip out of the existing commercial unit enabled the new hair and beauty salon to not be restrained by the adhoc nature of the existing building’s fabric.  The building’s length, nearly 80m, means that the more sensitive functional spaces are located in the centre of the building, whilst the rear of the building is used as a separate student entrance into the building.

Three new staircases have been installed within the building allowing different parts of the building to be accessed by different groups of students and customers.  The staircases also provide suitable means of escape from the upper floors of the building.
