The new art department entrance gallery provides the School with a contemporary space from which to display pupils’ work. It provides a light and open area creating a perfect canvas for the display of art and sculpture.
The Art Department is of the School’s listed buildings, and as such the new Entrance Gallery was designed to reflect the sensitivity of the site. A slim profiled zinc roof cantilevers over an oak framed glazed entrance screen and door. This creates a simple contemporary addition which sits comfortably within the surrounding Victorian buildings.
Internally, adjustments were made to the relationship with the existing building to ensure the new gallery was as open and usable as possible. Two asymmetrical skylights ensure that there is sufficient natural light throughout the depth of the gallery. The previous entrance door opening has been converted into an external display screen for larger pieces of art
